Towards the most broadcasted political trial

Togo - Politique
“Yes, we shall go to the criminal court, and say what what should be said" said Zeus Ajavon, a notorious lawyer investigated in the 'fire-gate' case in Togo along with political leader Jean Pierre Fabre who is the repeated loser of recent two presidential elections. To recall the case, massive fire destroyed commercial goods and buildings in both major cities markets of Lome and Kara on respectively January 09th and eleventh, which turned into a deep political and criminal case, businesses bankruptcy for many victims.
The French detectives and forensics experts concluded that the fires were of criminal origin without ever releasing publicly the reports of their investigation certainly due to on going prosecution. Some victims and suspects commented by qualifying this process as: ''An empty prosecution’s case built on politics with lack of evidence but serious violations of human rights'' .

Members of the opposition political parties were quickly identified and charged including Jean-Pierre Fabre the president of ANC, and Zeus Ajavon, the coordinator of the CST. The court indicated these two were the main accused because named in confessions of certain Mohamed Loum who denied such declaration few days later, according to some medias, stating that he would have been "corrupted" by authorities to make such accusations.

The prosecution stated the fires would have been prepared in the office of the ANC in coordination with the actors of CST. In return, CST and ANC strictly denied these charges, and published a report of their personal independent investigation which identified and suspected many individuals and authorities of government.

Unfortunately, the denials will not prevent the restraining orders, the tortures and human rights violations opposition activists and suspects claim to undergo and suffer critics said. The case of Etienne Yakanou who died in detention for lacking proper medical care is typical.

Hervé Sénou, another detainee in the 9/11 fire-gate case was not able to attend the funeral of his dear dead wife while he was in detention. The hardest part comes when he was free and exonerated the last week after 3 years for unlawful detention.

"Since the accusation, my every move should be indicated to the judge. I needed constantly authorizations of the judge for my journeys including the small travels outside Lomé ", tells Jean Pierre Fabre.

Zeus Ajavon will come to confirm the information by releasing letters of authorization he had to write before his regular travels as lawyer, sometimes up to 5 times per week.

''it is always easy to evoke counts of indictment to put citizens behind bars, but this is not good if the country has a broken justice with overloaded cases pending for years'' said many.
