Let’s talk learning difficulties. Dyslexia and vision

The ability to read effectively requires various skills including visual skills. Though one of the major difficulties experienced by individuals with dyslexia is reading skills problems, dyslexia should not be confused with the condition called visual stress which is equally referred to as visual perception difficulties, scotopic sentitivity syndrome, Irlen Syndrome and visual discomfort. Visual stress is a condition on its own.

Visual stress is a disorder affecting visual processing abilities causing difficulties during reading. Individuals with visual stress may experience problems with reading texts in black prints on a white background; the text may appear to be moving, jumping, blurring or looking like lines making reading tedious or impossible. There is also the risk of suffering from migraine, emotion sickness, tiredness; watering eyes, red eyes, concentration and attention problems. Often these people tend to use a finger to follow the text while reading.

It is very important to mention that, thus, a greater number of individuals with dyslexia may have visual stress, all people suffering from visual stress may not have dyslexia. Furthermore, individuals with dyslexia and /or visual stress may have perfect vision.

As previously stated, visual stress impacts on the ability to read long texts. Consequently, individuals with such a condition tend to avoid or dislike reading; therefore, to assist them progressing or gaining good reading skills, an assessment is recommended.
