Two Indian sailors released from Togo jail

Togo - Societe
India on Thursday said that two Indian sailors, arrested in Togo in July this year on charges of aiding pirates loot their ship, had been released from a jail in the African nation.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry said that the two sailors, Captain Sunil James and his colleague Vijayan of MT Centurion vessel, were released after a meeting between Indian officials posted in Ghana and President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe of Togo.

"Sailors from India Capt Sunil James & Vijayan released from detention in Togo will leave for home later today," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin tweeted this morning.

Captain James and his crew of MT Centurion were arrested in Togo in July over allegations of helping pirates loot their ship as they approached the authorities to complain against piracy. Though the authorities in Togo later dropped charges of helping the pirates, they were accused of complicity in theft.

India has been negotiating for their release after Captain James' family met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh early this month seeking his intervention in getting him released to perform the last rites of his 11-month-old son who died sometime back.
